Welcome to March fellow MI6 Café members! We hope you’ve had a great start to 2016, and with the monthly challenges and the start of the LDWS challenge we’ve seen some really great work produced in the fandom!  But don’t  forget that even if you’re not into creating, you can still take part in our livestreams and our book clubs!

Anon commenting is on so you don’t need an LJ account to join in the fun on this post! Please note, if you are using anon commenting , could you put your name/handle into the subject line/body of the comment so that everyone knows who they are talking to!

Weekly Recs

Don’t forget that we’re now using a new fic rec form through which you can submit your recs!

Last Month we were looking for all of your post-spectre fanworks! We've received many wonderful recs, so go check them out here!

This month we’re looking for those fanworks with under 200 kudos/notes. We want those fanworks that maybe are less well known in the fandom but still pack a punch. Send in your recs on our rec form and we’ll post your recs in April’s Monthly Post!!

In film club will be watching The Man with the Golden Gun on 5 March 2016, and The Spy Who Loved Me on 19 March 2016. Please see the schedules for more information on times!

This Month’s questions

Don’t forget that these questions are also released on tumblr as our Weekly Questions! That means twice the discussion! Feel free to use these questions as conversation starters and get to know your fellow Bond Fans!

1.       What are some of your favorite aspects of Bond canon that you think don't get enough appreciation? This could be anything from underrated scenes, certain characters, certain books/movies...whatever you love that needs more love!

2.       What kinds of meta and resources have you found informative and helpful? From what kind of gun that Russian assassin should be wielding to which Nando’s is closest to MI6 to what Bond’s canonical favorite food is, fanworkers often have questions that need answers. If you’ve found some great sources of helpful info, share them around!

3.       What are your headcanons about Eve and her job? What is her greatest accomplishment that we don’t know about?

4.       If you could change any one thing in the Bond franchise, what would it be?

well, I mean, Quantum of Solace is the big one. I'm not really sure otherwise. hang on - Tanner and Bond being best friends in the books, I really wish that made it into more of the movies... I keep thinking of QoS things. watch the movie, peeps. also MORE FELIX PLEASE. INCLUDE HIM IN ALL THE FANWORKS. ALL THE MOVIES.

2. What kinds of meta and resources have you found informative and helpful? From what kind of gun that Russian assassin should be wielding to which Nando’s is closest to MI6 to what Bond’s canonical favourite food is, fanworkers often have questions that need answers. If you’ve found some great sources of helpful info, reblog with links so we can share them around!
- that guns in movies wiki, imfdb.org, is useful
- google maps is great bc I know nothing about London and I can drop myself down in whatever street I like
- the james bond wikia and the mi6 hq websites have a lot of background information and stuff, bits from official bios etc. you have to be careful about those though because various sources contradict each other-Bond has a few different birthdays, for example.
- there's an official site where you can more or less tour skyfall lodge, skyfalllodge.com/#/0
- you can read the casino royale script (I think it's a late draft, a lot is the same but there are some sizeable differences) here http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/Casino-Royale.pdf
- there's lots of stuff in the books about Bond's preferences in various things but it really depends on how much book!canon you want to include
other than that... I have a lot of tumblr posts about guns and spies bookmarked, not that I actually refer to them a lot, oops.

3. What are your headcanons about Eve and her job? What is her greatest accomplishment that we don’t know about?
there's a line in the fic Slow Dancing In A Burning Room: "‘It's True, I Actually Run MI6: The Eve Moneypenny Story’" which I have always wanted to use as a fic title myself, because it's true - she might not be in charge, but she's so ingrained in the workings of MI6 that if she left it might fall down around M's ears. I think Eve Moneypenny in the modern world is a mixture of a secretary and a PA, as well as Mallory's rep if he can't make a meeting, as a decoy for the unsuspecting (people outside MI6 assume she's just a secretary without realising she's got ears like a bat, is more observant than some of the 00s and is smart as a whip), as M's ear to the ground around the rest of MI6, and as... well, an errand boy girl, unfortunately.

4. If you could change any one thing in the Bond franchise, what would it be?
I wish they could plan ahead more. it would have been great if they'd known what was going to happen in QoS when they were writing Casino Royale, or had had a plan for Spectre when they were making Skyfall, so that the latter films didn't feel like they were trying to force the connections between the stories. Maybe it's because I'm used to Marvel or Harry Potter, which were both planned out years in advance, but I prefer a bit more continuity in my franchises.

damnit I forgot to include Eve's biggest accomplishment! I don't actually know, tbh. hm. I think she would probably be very proud of how well she managed the transition from field work to office work.

Yes! I really like the idea that she's proud of that. She was able to adjust and thrive in a new position, and that's not easy!

I always forget about imfdb! Thanks for the reminder!

Also, we've had the continuity conversation, haha, so just know that I agree with you!

1) Bond things that I think need more love/attention:

FELIX.
All the Bond women tbh
Q’s leadership potential
Tanner
EVE CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH LOVE
Bond needing to recover from his horrible injuries? Honestly it would be nice to see a physical therapy scene where Bond is like “Yes! I achieved a light jog today and nearly touched my toes! I AM THE BEST” or something like that bc I think Bond’s ability to build himself back up from all the shit he goes through is important. It’s convenient for movies to be like “And then time-skip to when he was all better,” which I understand, but still, I really appreciate the hard work and diligence that Bond must put into his recovery (once he’s decided to recover).

2) I don't really have any go-to resources? I mean, reading the books has been helpful, but for certain details I usually just start with Google or Google Maps or Google Scholar or wherever and go from there?

3) Eve is a kind of last-line-of-defense bodyguard for M. Her job involves some errand running, which means she's also M's eyes and ears on the ground both in and outside of MI6. She knows pretty much everything that goes on at MI6 for that reason, having a high clearance level and knowledge of M's movements/wishes as well as a solid grasp on the more informal gossip vine. Her greatest accomplishment is the time when MI6 had a single glorious, perfect day when all the missions ran smoothly, everyone's paperwork and bureaucratic nonsense came out all right, etc., and it was all due to her behind-the-scenes wrangling.

4) Things I'd like to change: Spectre's narrative and thematic inconsistencies with Skyfall? The lazy almost-brothers backstory they gave Bond and Blofeld in lieu of developing any actual on-screen drama between them? Madeleine's character development, which made her seem like a different person in the first and second halves of the film? IDK I liked Spectre but apparently I also have some beef with it, haha.

1) I've always been suspicious of how fast Bond's recovery in casino royale was. especially after I started noticing the timestamps on all the texts - apparently the entire movie takes place within two weeks? I don't think so...

“Yes! I achieved a light jog today and nearly touched my toes! I AM THE BEST” I LOVE THIS SO MUCH OMG

3) the day goes perfectly. M looks at her suspiciously. Eve gives him her best innocent smile. M decides he really doesn't want to know.

4) I fluctuate so much between "me @ everyone involved in spectre: what the actual fuck" and "I LOVE THIS MOVIE GIVE ME TEN" so I feel you on that
