A new Friday means a new Weekly Chat! Don’t forget that the weekly chat is open until Friday of next week.

Anon commenting is on so you don’t need an account to join in the fun! If you are using anon comments, if you could put your name/handle in the subject line/body of the comments that would be fab (just so everyone knows who they are talking to!)

Weekly Recs
It’s time again for you to give your weekly recs! This week we’re looking for your favourite fics/art you’ve seen over the past week and those fics/art that fit into the genre of the week!

This week the genre of fanwork recs we’re looking for is: 10,000+ words. We want those fics and stories that are labours of love, the ones that keep you hooked until 4am or keep their creators up late at night finishing the final touches!

When reccing fic/art, please can you make a separate comment with ‘Week Rec’ in the subject title. If you’re commenting anon, then just put your handle in brackets after the ‘Weekly Rec’ bit - eg Weekly Rec (cass). This just helps your friendly mod hunt down all your links and put them into the weekly rec post!

Spectre Prompt Fest!
The MI6 prompt bingo table continues! We’re releasing a new prompt every week up to when Spectre is released in the UK on November 6th. You can write/draw/create anything of your choice in response to the prompt, and you can post fills for any of the revealed prompt!

This week the prompt is: “The past has come back to haunt me”

Exploding Objects Love doesn’t solve everything Broken Health and Safety Possession
Never say never “Make me disappear” “No.” The past has come back to haunt me Hidden
Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden
Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden

You can post your fills anywhere you like – tumblr, in the comments section of the weekly chat, to your own LJ! Feel free to link your fills in the chat, and don’t forget to tag your prompt fills with #mi6cafeprompt so everyone can share the 00Q love!

There is now an A03 collection that you can post your fills to! Please see the link on the sidebar!

This week’s questions

Feel free to add more questions below!

1)      Torture resistance training: Has Q had some, and if so, how did that go? Feel free to chime in re: Bond’s training as well if you like.
2)      Bond had to requalify as a 00. What kind of qualification tests would you give a Quartermaster?
3)      Worst Vacation Ever: What makes it horrible for them?
4)      What are Bond and Q’s thoughts about potentially having a kid?
5)      Bond and Q end up babysitting for one of the MI6 staff. Whose child/relation is it, and how would Bond and Q engage this new challenge together?

I think 1 and 2 may require more thought, but here's 3-5!

3) Worst holiday ever is because: Two options spring to mind. 1) They keep getting interrupted by work things (people calling Q for advice or input, Bond getting asked to help out on a local mission, someone discovering they're not civilians and jumping to wild conclusions, etc. "I just want to work on my tan," Q says. "Q, you don't tan, you burn like a lobster." "Are you sure? We haven't been able to spend more than forty-five minutes at the beach without being interrupted by an urgent phone call or an assassination attempt, so there's really no evidence, is there?"). When you work the long, dedicated hours that Bond and Q do, having a complete rest and recharge time is important.

OR 2) They get bored. I sometimes think of Q and Bond as being like high-energy working dogs: you've got to keep their minds active and stimulated, or they make their own (potentially destructive) brands of fun. Luckily, Bond and Q are good at keeping each other's minds active. Q, in particular, has spent a lifetime developing games and coping mechanisms against the boredom that can accompany genius.

4) The last time Bond thought about having a kid was right after his parents died, when he was remembering a casual remark his dad made about Bond giving him grandkids one day, and he decided there and then that he wouldn't subject any offspring to the pain of having parents who would die on you. Given his profession, he hasn't had cause to change his mind.

I think that the modernized Q Branch is Q's true progeny, but I also have a crack headcanon that Q donated his sperm when he was hard up for cash (maybe they pay more if you're a genius?), so he potentially has biological offspring somewhere.

5) Babysitting: The child is either Tanner's kid or Moneypenny's sister's kid. Q has media entertainment and humor on his side, so he's in charge if they're a generally quiet person or after Bond has worn them out. Bond's humor is halved by the fact that he can't make any sexual jokes, but he's charismatic and able to make "let's go do some P.T. in the weight room!" sound like a cool thing to do.

1) Ooo this is a good question! It depends on what headcanon I have for Q - if his background has its roots in criminal activity then I'd like to think so, maybe as part of his initiation into whatever gang he was hacking for. Otherwise, I don't think he would have had any specific torture training, even as Q, because it wouldn't necessarily be needed. Although maybe James would give Q a few points on how to deal with stress and how he cope with dangerous situations (maybe they were discussing the time James got tortured by Le Chiffre or something).

2) Working under stress, some sort of 'everything is going wrong and terrorists are attacking' kind of simulation. Dealing with pigheaded 00s who are assigned to the potential new Quartermasters with instructions to be as much of a pain as possible to see how the candidate copes.

3) They try and get away from it all and have a nice relaxing holiday and some terrorists try and ruin their fun. Whilst it keeps them both entertained they were trying to have a break from the international espionage stuff.

4) I don't think Bond would necessarily have a desire to have a kid of his own, generally due to his line of work and his own childhood. He wouldn't want to have a kid and then get killed on a mission and put his child through what he went through.

Q would be good with kids and enjoy kids but wouldn't necessarily have a desire to have any of his own until he met the right person. Maybe they would both talk about it, and if James got to a point where he would retire early they could adopt a child who was a bit older and who would love to get up to all kinds of antics with James and Q.

5) I'd like to think Eve has a kid, and her and her husband are having a night off and they ask James and Q to babysit her kid. Firstly because I like the idea of Eve as a badass working mum who saves the world during the day and then reads stories to her kids at night. Secondly because James and Q would try and profess that they couldn't do kids but they both have a soft spot for Eve's kids and they're basically Uncle James and Uncle Q.

3) I'd like to think James takes the initiative and throws Q's phone into the sea and is really impressed with himself until Q says's its waterproof and then phone continues to wring underwater :D

4) Omg imagine if Q came against his biological offspring who was hacking MI6.

5) Haha omg you can imagine James taking these tiny toddlers into the weights room to lift tiny baby weights and Q just throws his hands up in the air and gives the kids ice cream :D

laughs forever I'm a week late whoops but hey!

1) Torture resistance training: Has Q had some, and if so, how did that go? Feel free to chime in re: Bond’s training as well if you like.
I assume Q would have had some training, as he's so valuable to MI6, but only to a certain extent - they're more interested in stopping him from being kidnapped in the first place. I assume he's ok at it? I don't think he's a very good liar, but I think he's stubborn, so who knows... I think it gave him nightmares, though.
I assume once you get to a certain point in your field agent career you get torture training, and even more once you get to 00 status. James is very, very good at it, although he tends to taunt his torturers. Which is pretty stupid, but he's good at getting them to talk while they think they're interrogating him.

2) Bond had to requalify as a 00. What kind of qualification tests would you give a Quartermaster?
Are you talking stuff like shooting, or other stuff? I assume Q has studied computer science of some sort and also some kind of engineering (idk I failed physics at high school). I bet you do a lot of learning and training once Q Branch picks you up, so he would have learnt a lot while working his way up the ranks, which is when he probably learnt how to shoot guns etc. idk if they wold have done tests on him, but as he rose up the ranks I assume the old Q and some others were watching him, taking notes, assessing his leadership qualities, reaction to a crisis, adaptability etc. I assume they do test stuff like the tests Bond had to do in Skyfall, but they would have been different, tailored to his job and circumstances.

3) Worst Vacation Ever: What makes it horrible for them?
... they don't have time for holidays. like? I can't imagine it tbh

4) What are Bond and Q’s thoughts about potentially having a kid?
oooooh ok well: James? nope. he didn't have a terrible childhood but it was cut short and I don't think he would want to be responsible for a child - I don't think he likes them much, either. Q vaguely would want one, it would be nice (also he's a only child and his very italian mother is always going on about grandchildren [I think I previously mentioned Q having a sister... it changes depending on what I'm writing oops]) but he doesn't feel strongly about it either way, and with the amount of work he does he probably doesn't have time - not to mention how much danger a kid of theirs could potentially be in

5) Bond and Q end up babysitting for one of the MI6 staff. Whose child/relation is it, and how would Bond and Q engage this new challenge together?
ooooooh.... Eve has a brother with two little kids, and one time she was supposed to be babysitting for them and something urgent came up and she had to run, so Q, as her best friend, steps in... and James is dragged into it almost against his will. Q is good at it, because his cousins have kids and he likes them, but James just sort of sits there and systematically removes them from his lap and sends them back to Q
