A new Friday means a new Weekly Chat! Don’t forget that the weekly chat is open until Friday of next week.
Anon commenting is on so you don’t need an account to join in the fun! If you are using anon comments, if you could put your name/handle in the subject line/body of the comments that would be fab (just so everyone knows who they are talking to!)

Weekly Recs

It’s time again for you to give your weekly recs! This week we’re looking for your favourite fics/art you’ve seen over the past week and those fics/art that fit into the genre of the week!

This week the genre of fanwork recs we’re looking for is: photomanip. We want those artworks that are photomanipulations, those that have taken what we’ve seen on the screen and re-worked the images into a new picture!

When reccing fic/art, please can you make a separate comment with ‘Week Rec’ in the subject title. If you’re commenting anon, then just put your handle in brackets after the ‘Weekly Rec’ bit - eg Weekly Rec (cass). This just helps your friendly mod hunt down all your links and put them into the weekly rec post!

1. What school/club/sport activities were Bond and Q involved in as children?
well, James is easy - rugby, judo and mountain climbing are I think book canon, and we discussed scouts a few weeks ago. idk what else, I mean, I don't think he was a swot or anything, so academic clubs are out.
Q, well, he grew up in the 90s, when computers were taking off... unfortunately I have no idea really, did people have clubs? when did schools first get them? help I was born in 1997. other than that idk, whoops

2. Did Bond or Q ever have an imaginary friend? What would their ideal imaginary friend have been like?
James had one when he was little, because he was the only kid in an adult's world a lot, what with traveling around al the time for his dad's work and all.
Q, again, I'm not sure. Maybe not?

3. What is the one media franchise that Bond and Q both love?
why am I so bad at this week's questions? I honestly have no idea? nothing with action scenes or lots of computer/science stuff, which rules out - WAIT. MYTHBUSTERS. YES. Q has a picture of the 'it's science if you write it down' thing on his office wall. James used the stuff they learnt in the prison break episode to break out of a prison

4. What kind of recreational drugs have Bond and Q taken? Did they enjoy their experiences?
oh my god. I don't know? it's possible that James has been given a hallucinogenic by a villain at some point but I don't think he would take anything willingly? alcohol being his only vice. Q, on the other hand, well, he's probably dabbled. He spent a while at university, idk. but I literally know 0 things about drugs so idk what he might have dabbled in

5. What does Bond do when he wants attention from Q? Vice-versa?
oooooh. if they're in private they'll drape themselves over each other or something - Q once accused James of being a cat and James sulked for two days. Q also pokes James in his stomach if they're in bed together and he wants attention. at work James will ring Q up and pretend he's tech support - Q invariably hangs up on him, but it makes them laugh.

3. OMG. MYTHBUSTERS. THAT IS SO PERFECT.

5) That is so adorable. I'm grinning especially hard over the tech support bit!

i just realised what I wrote could mean Bond pretending that he was tech support or Bond pretending Q was tech support and I think both are good

OMG, both are indeed good! Double the tech support humor trouble. :D

1) Bond did scouts for a bit, as we talked about last week, and probably some orienteering to go with his mountain climbing and judo. I can see him doing theatre for a little while in order to impress a girl, but I don't think it stuck; too much of a time commitment and not socially advantageous enough. In fact, if there were clubs at his secondary school, he probably got a bit of a reputation for club-hopping depending on his flame of the week or whatever. (Bond: "I am suddenly VERY interested in practicing with the debate team.") I doubt people minded too much so long as he pulled his weight while he visited.

Q did long-distance running because his parents insisted he do some kind of sport. Once he got into it, it proved to be a useful way of turning his brain off, and Q still goes and does a long session on the treadmill when he's in the middle of a thorny problem and wants to reboot his thinking.

I bet Q also did some kind of speech activity: extemporaneous speaking, or debate, or Model United Nations or something. I think that would be helpful for a boy whose brain sometimes seemed to go too fast for his mouth to keep up, and that Q would be the sort to enjoy a challenge that depended more on honing skills than memorizing knowledge.

2) Bond would SO have an imaginary friend. One of the things I loved about reading Casino Royale was its emphasis on Bond's imagination. With Bond's readiness to imagine different scenarios with opponents or even just the Casino staff, I think he'd definitely be the kind of boy who got a lot out of playing with "action figures" (definitely not ~girly dolls~) and creating an imaginative social world for them, which could easily transfer into creating a character of his own to play with since the closest neighbors lived miles away. I imagine he'd be a bit like Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes.

I think a very young Q might have gone through a troubled phase where he created a peer who could understand everything he could, and he liked their company better than "those dumb babies." Eventually the peers got old enough that his parents could begin to help him see them as resources and potential friends. (I go back and forth on Q's parents. On the one hand: Orphan! On the other hand: Adorable mom with biceps the size of grapefruits and hugs that crush Q's spine and equally adorable genderqueer cenn who does all the cooking and wears sticky lipstick so they can leave a lip-print on Q's cheek when he comes to visit.)

3. OMG, how could I top Mythbusters? I think reality shows are probably the way to go, though. No crime drama/angst, no terrible science or terrible fight choreography to get uppity about...Maybe they like Top Gear or The Great British Bake-Off? (TBH I haven't seen either of those, but one is about cars and the other is about food, which are things they both probably like?)

4. Bond's used uppers in the line of duty before. He's had to go undercover in operations in which drug use is part of the culture, and you can't always back out of it or fake it. He's also been dosed with drugs by various baddies. So he's not a stranger to most mainstream drugs, but alcohol, as Carol says, is his preferred vice.
Q tried marijuana in the hopes that it would lend him some chill and all he got out of it was a massive headache. He took ecstasy (an upper) once or twice while he was in uni, and didn't like the feeling of being out of control. Mostly his view is that his brain is far too valuable to waste on illicit substances; he doesn't even indulge in alcohol very often.

5. Body contact, definitely. Depending on how difficult the partner is being about the attention, this can look like anything from poking to tickling to using the other person as lounge furniture. Q collects trivia about fucking for when he wants to give Bond a sort of auditory poke; in return, Bond makes up ridiculous fake science facts. Q can use Bond's full name, which Bond likes to protest isn't fair because Bond doesn't get to use Q's. But Bond can say Q's name in a certain tone, or just strip down and start masturbating while narrating his sexual fantasy, which also has an arresting quality to it.

aaah club hoping bc girls Bond is great, and so is debating Q, perfect

oooh I forgot top gear... I think James and top gear have a love-hate relationship bc on one hand car porn but on the other hand that segment with the jaaaaags bc idk why but I haver this headcanon that Craig!Bond drives a jaguar for boring to-ing and fro-ing in london, and also has his father's classic e type still? so he likes jaguars and objects to being called a cad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eWIrBOc3zE). I know book!bond drives a bentley but??? I don't really like modern bentleys so idk

"strip down and start masturbating while narrating his sexual fantasy, which also has an arresting quality to it" OH MY GOD

That clip! Lol, charming and likable and a bit deceptive...sounds like they have Bond's number. Bond would be like, "I would never try to pin the bill on someone I've had over for the weekend!" and Q is just, "'OH, SORRY, I RAN OVER THE EQUIPMENT YOU ISSUED ME...WITH MY JAG'" and like, "'OH, SORRY, I GOT BLOODSTAINS ON YOUR SWEATER...COULDN'T MESS UP MY JAG,'" etc. It becomes a standard way for him to take the piss.

I...don't know a lot about cars, tbh, but when I think of Bentley as a brand it always reminds me of uppercrust toffs. Less James Bond, more Inspector Lynley or some other titled detective. (A quick google search tells me that in Cars 2, which I haven't seen, the Prince character is portrayed as a Bentley. That probably says enough on its own about the brand.)

Oh, and I should probably say club-hopping for people of all genders...it's just easier to be obvious about the girls since it's the 1980s.

That is the best thing I have read today... I love it

I was a top gear fan for ages, even though I'm not really interested in cars, so I can fake it a bit

A day late with the photomanip recs, but they're still awesome! (NB: I'll make the Tumblr post, modeling it off last week's post where possible.)

Also: Loads of the great photomanips in the fandom are actually title covers for awesome fics, so I'm definitely going to ask any authors or photo-manippers to reblog if they know some I've missed!
