A new Friday means a new Weekly Chat! Don’t forget that the weekly chat is open until Friday of next week.
Anon commenting is on so you don’t need an account to join in the fun! If you are using anon comments, if you could put your name/handle in the subject line/body of the comments that would be fab (just so everyone knows who they are talking to!)
Weekly Recs
It’s time again for you to give your weekly recs! This week we’re looking for your favourite fics/art you’ve seen over the past week and those fics/art that fit into the genre of the week!
This week the genre of fanwork recs we’re looking for is: fanmix. We want your fanvourite song mixes that remind you of 00q!
When reccing fic/art, please can you make a separate comment with ‘Week Rec’ in the subject title. If you’re commenting anon, then just put your handle in brackets after the ‘Weekly Rec’ bit - eg Weekly Rec (cass). This just helps your friendly mod hunt down all your links and put them into the weekly rec post!
Spectre Prompt Fest!
The MI6 prompt bingo table continues! We’re releasing a new prompt every week up to when Spectre is released in the UK on November 6th. You can write/draw/create anything of your choice in response to the prompt, and you can post fills for any of the revealed prompt!
This week the prompt is: “Red”
You can post your fills anywhere you like – tumblr, in the comments section of the weekly chat, to your own LJ! Feel free to link your fills in the chat, and don’t forget to tag your prompt fills with #mi6cafeprompt so everyone can share the 00Q love!
There is now an A03 collection that you can post your fills to!
MI6 Café Book + Film Club
Our current book for book club is Live and Let Die, which you can find resources for in the links on the sidebar. We already started discussing the first half last weekend, but there's still time to join in! The next Book Club to discuss this book will be held on September 19th.
Potential trigger warnings for Live and Let Die include:
This week’s questions
1. How many months of the year do you think Bond is on home soil? Missions take time, obviously, but so does healing from missions… (And there’s probably mandatory leave after a certain amount of field time or something.)
2. Happy reunions certainly have their place, but a lot of the time there is also a definite transition or adjustment period after a partner returns home from a lengthy trip. How do Bond and Q navigate the mission-to-home transition? Is it different when Q is the one who has to leave for some reason?
3. Which spots can one character massage and the other character eventually turns into a melted mess because that’s where they carry all of their tension?
4. What do they do when they can’t sleep?
5. What overwhelms them, and what do they do when that happens?

Date: 2015-09-12 06:08 am (UTC)Maths time! and random bond trivia time (well, not really. y'all will read Moonraker next and then you'll all know this stuff). Anyway...
In Moonraker Bond says that he maybe gets 3 missions a year, and spends the rest of his time training/absorbing useful information/doing paperwork, with any medical leave he needs plus two weeks leave at the end of each 'job.' A mission can last anywhere between a week and a month, I assume. I'd say modern Bond does 5 or 6 missions a year and needs medical leave after half of those. So... let's just say 6 missions of 2 weeks length, plus 2 weeks of medical leave 3 times, plus 2 weeks leave after each mission, that's... 12 weeks on mission, 12 weeks leave, 6 weeks in medical.... leaving 22 weeks a year of being stuck at HQ annoying Q and practicing parkour or something. Of course, this is ideal... he might need a lot more time in medical sometimes, or some of his recovery time could be included in the 22 weeks.
Of course the next question is, how much of his 12 weeks leave does he spend in London vs idk, Paris or whatever? more than he used to before Q, I imagine, but sometimes the travel bug gets him and off he goes. Then Q gets weird postcards from places he's never heard of
2. Happy reunions certainly have their place, but a lot of the time there is also a definite transition or adjustment period after a partner returns home from a lengthy trip. How do Bond and Q navigate the mission-to-home transition? Is it different when Q is the one who has to leave for some reason?
with Q it's just like he's gone away on a working holiday or whatever. James on the other hand, well, it depends on how the mission went. if it went well he'll transition just fine, maybe switch languages half way through a sentence or something trivial, but if it hasn't gone well he'll brood angrily and stay like that for a while. it's best to just leave him alone
3. Which spots can one character massage and the other character eventually turns into a melted mess because that’s where they carry all of their tension?
ok so idk anything about massage so I can't really answer this!
4. What do they do when they can’t sleep?
Depends on why! James gets up and goes to the punching bag/gym set up they have in the spare bedroom in some situations, or goes and reads in the living room in others. Q will get out his laptop with headphones and the screen adjusted to not be way too bright... drinking sometimes happens with both of them, James more than Q
5. What overwhelms them, and what do they do when that happens?
Q fears failure. He freaked out after Skyfall, thought he'd lose his job even though (my headcanon bc hollywood computer stuff sucks) there was nothing he could have done bc Silva had a mole in Q Branch. He's now even more determined to make Q Branch the best it can be, so that he never has to be in that position again. Failure usually makes him freeze up, so he just tries really hard to make sure it never happens.
James... James is overwhelmed by caring. He does it too much but he hates doing it, and his response is to shut down emotionally. Not very healthy

Date: 2015-09-12 02:04 pm (UTC)2) I love the idea of James switching languages half way through a conversation, maybe it's how Q manages to learn how to swear in half a dozen languages cos James keeps screwing up?
5) I agree so hard with your reading of Q, he does strike me as the type of person who would struggle with failure (even though as you say he couldn't do any more because Silva already had a mole).
That's a really interesting point, I like to think that James has learnt how to care (and know how to be okay with it) by being in a relationship with Q.

Date: 2015-09-18 02:47 am (UTC)2. That's interesting about the language switching--I wouldn't have thought of that, but I really like the idea.
5. James </3 I can't decide if I agree with Q's or not--it rings true to me, but I think my headcanon is that he used to fear failure a lot (a bit like 3rd-year Hermione with her "I FAILED EVERYTHING" boggart) but now has learned to cope and move on from it a bit more healthily.
Re: Castillon
Date: 2015-10-06 01:13 am (UTC)5) yeah, Q's working on it, it's a work in progress

Date: 2015-09-12 02:00 pm (UTC)2) I think they both have deep understanding as to what the other does for their day job, which helps. Maybe Q gets seconded on a mission somewhere and when he comes back James helps him navigate through the emotions of whatever mission he's been on. I think Q would act more like a steady rock for James, listening when needed but also gently encouraging him to do normal home things (like washing up).
3) Neck, for both of them.
4) James would watch crap TV, Q would try to reprogram the TV to make some sort of weird gadget that he'll try to re build in Q branch the next day.
5) I think for James it would be his memories, of previous missions and childhood, and potentially the feeling of not being in control. He strikes me as someone who would need to know that they are in control of the situation and when that doesn't happen he can lose it a bit. His coping mechanism would normally be alcohol, but post Q it could just be talking out his thoughts to Q or going for a very very long run.
For Q I think it would be him being frustrated at not being able to solve something/not being the best at something. He would have a hard time coping with failure. To cope he might just try and grit his teeth and go into 'I'll prove them all wrong' mentality, and maybe James can be there to teach him how to adapt to things going wrong and saying that things going wrong isn't necessarily a bad thing all the time.

Date: 2015-09-18 02:55 am (UTC)3) YES.
4) I strangely really like the idea of Bond watching crap reality TV? He's so well-versed in social stuff that I think all of the interpersonal conflicts and the opportunity to basically people-watch would be entertaining to him if he were in the right mood for it. He might also "shop" for new characters or characteristics to incorporate into an undercover role when he's on-mission.
5) Totally agree with the idea of Bond needing to be control, especially in regards to book canon, though there's lots of potential for it in the Craig-verse too.
Q definitely feels a need to be the best, and I love your idea of Bond helping Q adapt to mistakes or things going wrong!

Date: 2015-09-17 10:05 am (UTC)2. They have amazing reunion sex when Bond isn't too injured for it, but when they're living together there's also a bit of grumpiness as they adjust to each other's irritating habits again (leaving empty glasses of booze lying around, having disgusting amounts of cheap take-away in the fridge). They also tend to end up sleep-deprived for the first few nights bc 1) reunion sex, 2) how do I fit into the bed with another person again?, 3) sometimes post-mission stress makes it hard to finally relax with each other. I think for both of them the ease of transition depends on how well the mission went. Bond sulks when Q leaves him behind, but he also enjoys the novelty of being able to welcome Q home instead of the other way around. There's less fear that Q will shuffle off in the line of duty, too--Q's job is generally to stay behind the bodyguards and be smart at the enemy, after all.
3. Neck. (I'm so happy to have found a fandom with so much nape!porn.) Also the base of the spine and the calves. Bond likes having his feet massaged; it's a domestic kind of physicality that he doesn't generally get on missions. Q doesn't like people touching his feet, but he's happy to rub Bond's.
4. Bond drinks. Sometimes it's dark and broody drinking, sometimes it's just a few sips accompanied by the soothing lull of golf or home shopping or what-have-you. Sometimes he works out as well. Q has a folder full of incredibly boring, ridiculously detailed theses in fields he's not invested in (biochemistry, botany, etc) that he reads when it's an easily tamable kind of insomnia; otherwise he starts doing some kind of busy work, like digging into his paperwork backlog or catching up on academic innovations in his field or building yet another terrifyingly-thorough alias in case he ever has to go on the run.
5. For Bond: happiness. He gets paranoid when life seems to be going his way, because obviously that's going to turn out to be too good to be true due to everything and everyone secretly or not-so-secretly being terrible. Mostly he tries to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. It took a long time to convince him that Q wasn't a traitor and/or going to try to kill him and/or dump him for a stupid reason.
For Q: trust and unconditional positive regard. He's so used to having to do this, do that in order to get people to like and accept him, that to realize someone has his back for reasons other than his usefulness is a powerful thing. He tries not to think about it too much, except for when he's safe in bed and can smile into his pillow and try not to cry about it. (He tries and generally fails not to return that loyalty tenfold.)
