[identity profile] mi6-cafe-mod.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] mi6_cafe
It’s that time for the weekly chat again! Grab your tea and confectionaries and head on down for a chat!

Don’t forget that the weekly chat is open until Friday of next week (where I will post a new weekly chat post full of exciting mi6 café updates).

Please remember that anon commenting is on so you don’t need an account to join in the fun! If you are using anon comments, if you could put your name/handle in the subject line/body of the comments that would be fab (just so everyone knows who they are talking to!)

Weekly Recs
It’s time again for you to give your weekly recs! This week we’re looking for your favourite fics/art you’ve seen over the past week and those fics/art that fit into the genre of the week!

This week the genre of fanwork recs we’re looking for is: Short and Sweet. This week we want those fics/art that are short and to the point – maybe a ficlet that’s a few hundred words or a piece of art that is a sketch.

When reccing fic/art, please can you make a separate comment with ‘Week Rec’ in the subject title. If you’re commenting anon, then just put your handle in brackets after the ‘Weekly Rec’ bit - eg Weekly Rec (cass). This just helps your friendly mod hunt down all your links and put them into the weekly rec post!

Spectre Prompt Fest!

The MI6 prompt bingo table excitement continues! We’re releasing a new prompt every week up to when Spectre is released in the UK on November 6th. You can  write/draw/create anything of your choice in response to the prompt, and you can post fills for any of the revealed prompt!

This week the prompt is: Love doesn’t solve everything.

Exploding Objects Love doesn’t solve everything Hidden Hidden Hidden
Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden
Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden
Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden Hidden

You can post your fills anywhere you like – tumblr, in the comments section of the weekly chat, as a post on the comm, or to your own LJ! Feel free to link your fills in the chat, and don’t forget to tag your prompt fills with #mi6cafeprompt so everyone can share the 00Q love!

If you are posting your fill as a separate post on the comm, please follow the guidelines on the Comm's profile page with regards to headers. This helps your friendly mods create the relevant tags to ensure things are easy to find!

This week’s questions

To celebrate the chat being extended to a further week, we’ve got some more questions for you to answer and discuss!

1)      How did you get into the 00Q fandom?
2)      Had you watched any Bond films previously before Skyfall?
3)      Whose your favourite Bond actor?
4)      If you could change one thing about Skyfall what would it be and why?

Feel free to add more questions below!

all right *cracks knuckles* time for angst prompt. Annnnd i'll go look at the guidelines right now. i'm sorry. ;A;

1. Skyfall. Just. I typed 00q in the search bar on tumblr and my life has not been the same since.

2. I have actually. My dad is a big Connery!Bond fan so, I have seen all of those. Some of Moore!Bond [My dad says that Moore was a sissy bond, lmao oh father], watched OHMSS [which is the best godddamn title for a Bond movie and one of the WORST MOVIES, and *shudders* Brosnan!Bond. Brosnan!bond got the "hacker villain" movies and cheap thrills of CGI land that don't hold up well. At all. Brosnan!Bond is my dad's least favorite Bond.

3. Connery!bond and Craig!Bond. Dalton!Bond get a mention too because he and Craig!Bond are the closest to the books when it comes to bond.

4. Honestly, the way that Q was written. Using him as a plot device was kinda campy. And.. uh ... retrieving that list? There wasn't a mention that the list was recovered. They nabbed Silva's laptop but no mention of the list. Maybe more of Silva being an asshole so I could hate him more as a villain. I usually love villains that get under my skin and piss me off so much [ahemumbridgeahem. ahemjasonisaacscharacterinthepatriotahem]

1) How did you get into the 00Q fandom? It's so long ago I don't really remember, but after I saw Skyfall I started following people in the Craig!Bond fandom on tumblr, which is probably where I first encountered the ship. I first thought oh, I get this ship now after reading 'Slow Dancing in a Burning Room' by feelslikefire

2) Had you watched any Bond films previously before Skyfall? Nope, Skyfall was my first Bond encounter, after which I went back and watched the other Craig!Bond movies and then started on the books. I've now watched all the Brosnans *shudders* as well as the first 3 Conneries and Moonraker (I cried real tears, it was such a let down after the book)

3) Whose your favourite Bond actor? Daniel Craig, hands down. I feel like his character is closest to the book's version, and I really like how he plays the character - plus he's the best looking imho

4) If you could change one thing about Skyfall what would it be and why? the fact that if you think enough about the plot it sort of falls apart - also can we not with Q's epic fail *proceeds to write it out in every fic*

1) Lots of Skyfall posts appeared on tumblr, and having seen the film four times I reblogged all of them, and then, though the first fics didn't convince me, the small part of fandom that I've known had a skype chat and headcanon by headcanon, all turned into fics, I was dragged into 00Q/

2) All of them and repeatedly. Some more than the others. Brosnan's films used to be my favorurites when I was 6. But then, they were the ones TV showed most often so.

3) Craig is really great, and I don't want to get rid of him, but choosing from the old ones, Connery is the first favourite, Dalton was also good, because pretty close to the books and then if you remove rediculousness of Brosnan's films, on his own he was alright. But yeah, Craig, Connery, Dalton, in this order.

4) Stop making Q incompetent for the plot's sake. Please. And then also mention the plot. So yes, I'd remove Q's fail and at least show the drive, because what the hell happened to the list.

(sorry I wasn't more active last week, I suck at time management, you probably realised by now)

I'm glad we're all in agreement on the treatment of Q. I hope his role is better in SPECTRE. Q is and always will be James's closest confidant because Q supplies him with all the tech he needs. Sure, Davis's Q never really left the office because he was too busy trying out new things in Q-branch and I kinda want the same thing for whishaw!Q. It looks like he's pulling a Moneypenny where he goes out on a mission and then decides, lol nope it's not for me.

Also, that must have been one hellava long train ride to get Q to ....wherever they are in the mountains to go help James since Moneypenny said that Q was afraid of flying.

I just hope that he gets developed into the Q that we know from the older movies but updated to where we can all relate to him.

I wrote a little something for this week's prompt last night and posted it on tumblr, so I thought I'd share it over here

Not for the first time this week, Q wakes up alone. (http://isthisrubble.tumblr.com/post/123198114793)

I think Davis's Q went into the field in one of the Moore movies, to bring some sort of flying contraption and assmeble it himself. On one hand, I want Q to stay in the office, on the other if all we'll hear about him is testing stuff it'll remind me of older Qs too much. I think I'd like to see some of it, in different forms (like maybe telling R&D what to do instead of exploding pens, when he's not being a plot device)

1) Watched Skyfall. Looked up fic. Fell. in love. instantly.

2) Only a few that I'd seen on TV! Including the one with Sean Connery and the dubcon shower scene, which is when I learned from my mom that "That's not okay" and you should definitely have more respect for women's consent than Bond does. Ah, childhood memories.

3) Daniel Craig? I definitely do not have an informed opinion about this. But I'm pretty sure that I'm spoiled re: his action sequences. :D

4) Hahaha yep, definitely in agreement re: Q's blunder and the fact that the plot doesn't quite hold up in the details! I might also change Severine's role, or at least Bond's whole "I like you better when you don't have a weapon, and also hey, why don't we have sex while you're less able to tell me no?" thing.

5) What's the crackiest AU you can think of?

6) How do Bond and Q divvy up the housework re: living together?

2. Yeah, I saw the first ten minutes of GoldenEye on youtube and was like, "...no, I don't think so." I love Pierce Brosnan in other roles (like The Thomas Crown Affair!) but as Bond, not so much--and from the limited clip I saw, I don't think that the script did him favors. Ah, well. It was the nineties.

4. SO TRUE.

Yes, I'd love to see what Q branch DOES do if they're not doing exploding pens. It'd be good to see Q in more of his natural office environment as opposed to, you know, emergency bunkers and whatnot, though I enjoyed the fact that Q had to adapt to different circumstances.

If we are lucky in a shipping kind of way, then Bond has determined that Q is the only one he can trust in the new MI6 and has hauled him into the mountains as his tech-savvy partner. (Why yes, I will take missing scene fanfic for 500, Alex.) Afterward Q tells Bond to be grateful because that is never. happening. again. There's a reason he doesn't go "out there in the field."

i like to think sometimes that they use sex as a reward for doing housework.

I think James always does laundry. Q does the dishes [since james cooks] I like to think that Q cleans the house in frustration or when James is out on a mission. James tries to clean the house after mission but Q forces him to lay in bed and BLOODY REST for fuck's sake james, you'll rip out your stitches.

Sex as a reward for housework--how motivating! I guess they're one couple who actually look forward to spring cleaning season...

House cleaning would be exactly the kind of manual, don't-have-to-think-too-much kind of work that Q might indulge in when he's stressed out, and that Bond might try to get away with when he's on medical leave. Funny to think that a little bit of dust in the house probably means that all's right in the world for them!

Q does the home improvement and repairs. Bond is the one who mostly combines all of their furniture together in ways that don't look ridiculous, plus handling other aesthetic considerations that might come up. Bond is also the one who tends to make the phone calls to the landlord or whoever else might need charmed into agreeing that the tiny explosion that the neighbor reported really wasn't a big deal, or what-have-you, because he doesn't mind using his manipulative spy tricks for domestic purposes.

Bonus headcanon: they share a mutual passion for ridiculously specific kitchen gadgets, and sometimes when Bond breaks out the mandolin or the zester or the cherry pitter then Q helps with the cooking.

I am about 95% positive they would sit there and bitch about how to properly set up IKEA furniture to the point where they either.

a. call Alec, in which Alec would just make fun of James for sucking at reading SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS.

b. call Eve, where she would do it no problems and then tell Alec and then it goes back to point A.

c. call Tanner because Tanner wouldn't rat either of them out but now they are in Tanner's debt.

Re: Castillon

Date: 2015-07-06 06:41 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
Q gets so incensed by the "in Tanner's debt" thing and the "getting made fun of by Alec and Eve" thing that he goes into a furniture-making research fugue for a day and emerges knowing exactly what a flugel-whatever is and HOW TO BUILD ONE BETTER, IKEA. "DO YOU HEAR ME? I WILL BEAT YOU AT YOUR OWN GAME. NOW /I/ AM THE MASTER." Q hates to lose. Besides, who needs Ikea when you can have "more of a personal statement"? (Q is also a bit of a snob.)

Afterward, he and Bond occasionally venture into Q Branch's small carpentry center when they've got insomnia and come out covered in sawdust and looking smug and finally able to sleep. Bond makes Q design him a lot of personalized kitchen tables and islands and things, and some furniture with built-in hidey-holes for weapons.

(*cough* The dining room table may or may not be exactly the right height for fucking. Just saying.)

(But they are never having sex on Bond's kitchen island, which has some useful adjustable sections that make things easier on him when he has various injuries as well as places for all of his favorite kitchen gadgets and knives. The island is Sacred Cooking Space. Coincidentally, it is also where Q likes to be a tease.)

Since Eve is so good at assembling it, she and Alec retaliate by populating their flats with IKEA furniture whenever they need something new so they can watch Q try not to make "WE MEET AGAIN, NEMESIS" faces whenever he comes over and spots their latest acquisition.

Not sure how Tanner would react. Thoughts?

one of my personal headcanons is that Tanner was friends with Q in college. [irl the actors are only three years apart so it's not that bit of a stretch].

Tanner knows that when they lived together they got cheap ass furniture from IKEA. Q could never assemble it, or he would assemble it backwards. Tanner would just tell Q to get him a beer and he'd assemble it himself. Tanner, like his job, just keeps a cool and calm appearance as he does his job.

So when Q calls him out of the blue on his personal phone rather than his work phone [which comes up as Q's real name, not his identity at MI6], a two things go through Tanner's head:

1. Something bad has happened because Q would never call the personal. It's reserved for Tanner's wife.
2. He needs something built since carpentry is not Q's strongest strength.

Tanner's price is that Q gets him a six pack of beer and buys dinner. And since James isn't building anything either, he can finish his goddamn paperwork.

Thomas Crown was really good, so was The Ghost Writer. Neither of four scripts did him any favours and I agree with isthisrubble, that he had potential, but nothing to work with (apart from Sean Bean)

all three, yes.

Also, throwing in my headcanon, contrary to books I don't think either Bond or Q would be big on the idea of having a housekeeper, however Alec has no qualms about using whoever occupies the lowest post in MI6 to occasionally dust his flat.

*whiny voice* but die another day was so baaaaaaaaaaayyyuuuddd.

and yeah i agree. which is why i can watch them but they are movies that are trying to be serious when they're real campy. [joe don baker anyone? ugh [mst3k fans around?]] They do get shit on but a lot of people shit on Quantum of Solace, too.

QoS suffered because of that horrendous writer's strike. Personally, when i first saw it in theaters, i hated it. I didn't like it at all. It wasn't until I got the box set of all the movies when I decided to rewatch it and i was like: ...this....actually isn't that bad.

I feel like I really should rewatch Brosnan's films but...I just. I never saw him as Bond, imo. He's too nice of a guy. He wasn't an asshole enough to be bond to me. [which to me, daniel is a great fit because he's mr smexy and asshole enough to be an agent.] connery is like d craig's bond but a bit too much of an asshole, not enough agent. dalton was a great bond, and lazenby..... /sighs/ lazenby. Moore is kinda like Brosnan, he was /too/ nice as bond and not enough asshole. He also got some...horrible movie scripts, too. [moonraker MOONRAKER]

oh, I know, Die Another Day was terrible. It would make a great comedy, but it was trying way too hard to be a serious action film.

QoS wasn't too bad, especially compared with Bronsan's films. I feel like the cast tried to make it better and they did, Craig in particular.

Moore was even more of a nice guy than Brosnan. As much as I couldn't see Brosnan as gritty and violent, I could maybe picture him as a bit rough around the edges. Moore, definitely not. Connery was often too much of an asshole, agreed. Maybe because Fleming consulted the first three (?) films Connery was pretty close to the books, though I'd say Craig's even closer.
I really liked Dalton, I wish he'd signed the contract earlier when he had an offer, I'd like to see more of him. (tbh I bought Scarlett mini series box set because he was in it)

yeah i never really enjoy that Bond had a housekeeper. IIRC she wasn't part of SIX was she? She didn't know what he did? I would assume after the 5th time he came home bloodied and bruised, she would begin to question it unless she was /blind/

As for alec. Oh totally. He would make an intern's life a living hell until they got on the payroll.
