Weekly Recs

It’s time again for you to give your weekly recs! This week we’re looking for your favourite fics/art you’ve seen over the past week and those fics/art that fit into the genre of the week!

This week the genre of fanwork recs we’re looking for is: Established Relationship. We want those fanworks which have James and Q in an established relationship!

When reccing fic/art, please can you make a separate comment with ‘Week Rec’ in the subject title. If you’re commenting anon, then just put your handle in brackets after the ‘Weekly Rec’ bit - eg Weekly Rec (cass). 1. i'm enjoying it! It gets me writing so I really like it. And I love reading everyone's other versions of the prompts.

2. A pen. And Q is about to get all pissy and James says: i got R to make it explode and Q is like: WHAT?!
Or a puppy. I can see James randomly buying a puppy just because.

3. If we want to be literal, James was taught by his Uncle Max in the Young Bond series. [and where he inherits the DB]. But, I think he was not only taught by relatives that brought him in, I bet his dad let him drive when he was 11 or 12.

I don't write/draw or anything, but I'm really enjoying reading all that new stuff!

2)What do you think is the most ridiculous present that James has bought for Q for his birthday?
The cheapest, most mainstream tourist souvenir from someplace he went on assignment. He thought it'd be funny. It wasn't. So to make up for it he took Q to a dinner in some very fancy restaurant. Which wasn't much better. Next year he just bought Q a copy of The Anarchist Cookbook. Or a puppy. I'm 100% in favour of the puppy.

3)Where do you think James learnt his driving skills?
Oh god, I *think* I read about it somewhere. Might've been the "Authorized Biography", but I don't have it with me atm so I can't check. Anyway, I seem to remember something about learning how to drive when he was a teenager and in France.
In any case, my headcanon is that he inherited the car (whether we go with the old Bentley or an Aston Martin), or maybe inherited the money and bought a car, and taught himself to drive on these pretty roads in Scotland. And then just raced anyone who accepted the challenge because he was a competitive little fucker and liked showing off.

1) Are you enjoying the Spectre Prompt fest so far? Do you like seeing what other people have created in response to the same prompts? I've been fighting with my current WIP for a while now so it's nice to write something small and quick, to make sure I haven't lost the knack entirely. And it's amazing how differently people interpret things!

2) What do you think is the most ridiculous present that James has bought for Q for his birthday? A new flat. Q hadn't had a chance to move since he got promoted, and he was still living in a stuffy little place without room to swing a cat. Q couldn't believe it, and in the end he forced James to let him pay him back.

3) Where do you think James learnt his driving skills? I think he started driving young - Young Bond has him about 12 or so, driving his uncle's car, while I think modern Bond would have been given driving lessons by his father/Kincade when he was about 10 or so. As long as it was on private property i assume it's legal in the UK. So by the time he could legally drive on the road, he knew exactly what he was doing. As far as, you know, crazy car chases driving, I bet he bought his first car as soon as he could and took it around to all those open racetrack things where you can BYO car and just drive around. And I swear I read somewhere about the military (although it might b a US thing) having defensive driving courses, I bet he did those, too, and aced them.

1) I'm loving the Spectre Prompt fest! I'm finding it very challenging to work to the prompts, but it's been a good exercise and I hope to actually post something soon. I love seeing other people's varying ideas on the same theme! Special props to the poetry we've seen as well.

2) The cremated ashes of a criminal who injured or scared him cruelly. Q treats Bond in much the same way that he treats the cat when the cat decides to drop a mangled beetle or a headless bloody mouse on his pillow.

"Can't you build a machine for that?"
"I could also build a machine to water a plant. It would be a lot less work. A lot less hair, too." The cat, a rescue with one eye missing and a tattered ear, promptly settles into Q's lap and starts purring. "I suppose a plant can't do that," Q says. His fingers, as if of their own volition, start scritching behind the cat's ears.
"It will be good for your blood pressure," Bond says. "You need someone to pet besides me.")

3) Love the canon answers that people have been giving from the Young Bond series! I like the idea of Bond learning early, but I definitely think that some kind of advanced driving course would have either 1) been part of his MI6 training, or 2) been something he sought out himself, along with a track to cut loose on, once he had the salary to pay for lessons and a good car. Love the idea of Bond racing anyone who'll take him. Bet he got lots of good driving tips from the people who won against him before suddenly he started winning against them!

New question: We've talked about Bond and Q's first date. What do you think their last date would be like?

there is no last date. nope. why would you suggest something so unlikely

... but seriously, I think it would be just like any other date, because yes, Bond could die at any time, but obviously they're hoping he doesn't, so they don't do the whole 'let's make tonight special because I might not come back' thing, mainly because James thinks that will jinx him

Omg cremated ashes for birthday :D This is a great idea though.

So about 3 and the track... Craig!Bond being born in West Berlin, he probably spent some time in Germany... So *maybe* he took a trip to Nürburgring? Because that would be immensly cool.

Also, last date. I'm like the idea that Bond thinks doing something special just in case will jinx him. But what if one of them decided to break up? Like Q couldn't stand being worried and trying not to let it affect him at work, and they're having a nice evening at home, with some takeaway, unless one of them bothered to cook, and when they're done eating he says that he's moving out in the next couple of days.
Or... OR. Bond's back from a quick mission in Venice, and he spends the return flight (or train ride, any journey really. though I feel like train would be appropriate) thinking about what happened years ago, and is reminded of how terrible he felt, of all the pain and betrayal and he starts wondering how he'd feel if Q died. How *Q* would feel if James died, very suddenly and no doubt in a violent way. And he decides that he'd rather end it now, than deal with all this. And while it sounds a bit like pity party, he'd go through with it, convince himself he's over it, tell Q they're done and treat him with cool professionalism until he eventually died.

I can never decide if Bond would be self-sacrificing enough to do that? I mean sure he's self sacrificing for work, but I feel like he's a bit too selfish about his personal life to try and protect Q like that? although, if it's after a trip to venice, he might...

I'm in between. On one hand I sort of would like this to happen, but on the other it sounds too improbable, because I'm not sure he'd spare anyone he wanted to keep close to himself. Lots of dead friends and lovers to confirm this.

OMG, great discussion, guys. I've gotta say that I fall into the camp of Bond being too selfish to break up with Q for the "it's better this way" reason; he's a man who likes pleasure, and I think with his potential life expectancy he'd grab onto a good thing like Q with both hands. But I don't doubt that there are circumstances (Venice, yeah) that could put him into a more self-destructive frame of mind.

And yeah, I doubt they'd have a special occasion before a dangerous mission--much easier to pretend that things are business as usual. Which they kind of would be, with all the dangerous occasions Bond's escaped from.

OTOH, if one of them knew that they were fatally dying but had a little time left, I can see them going somewhere meaningful--maybe to the stupid museum, or some other place where they made important memories--and having a nice domestic night in afterward. They eat take-away and bicker about one of the things they're always bickering about, only this time the healthy one lets the other one win, which causes a brief shouting match that ends in swearing and cuddles.
