Weekly Recs

It’s time again for you to give your weekly recs! This week we’re looking for your favourite fics/art you’ve seen over the past week and those fics/art that fit into the genre of the week!

This week the genre of fanwork recs we’re looking for is: Podfic. We want those podfic fanworks which have taken those fics we know and love and put them into an audible format!

When reccing fic/art, please can you make a separate comment with ‘Week Rec’ in the subject title. If you’re commenting anon, then just put your handle in brackets after the ‘Weekly Rec’ bit - eg Weekly Rec (cass). This just helps your friendly mod hunt down all your links and put them into the weekly rec post!

1) Have you ever listened to podfic before? What are your views on it? No, I haven't actually, it's just not my thing, I get distracted too easily, but I bet people who have trouble reading stuff on screens or have low vision love them! I would say, however, that I know lots of podficers are american reading english characters, and idk how I'd feel if my fics were being read in an american accent... (likewise, I would never podfic for any of my fandoms, because they're not australian!)

2) What is the one thing you are most looking forward to in the fandom after the Spectre release? (More fic/art? More Meta? More fans to join in the fun?) More material to work with, hopefully! More fans, more creators, more meta, the works. I really hope that some of the authors I discovered a bit later who haven't posted anything Bond since 2013 come back to the fandom, tbh

3) Are any of you planning on taking part in the reverse big bang this year? Yes, actually! I found the writing commitment a bit overwhelming last year, so I signed up as an artist this time. We'll see how it goes!

4) Who do you think leads out of James and Q? is this... a dancing question? Probably Bond, as he's the better dancer. If this is not what the question means, then I have no idea...

5) It’s a Friday night! What do you think James and Q would be doing on a Friday night? Staying in with a movie (and then argue over what movie it is?) or going out? ooooh, depends what sort of week they've had! Probably staying in, all things considered. If either of them has had a bad week, they probably watch silly animal videos in youtube. Otherwise, curling up with a book and a glass of something sounds like a good plan. Maybe they alternate who choses the music each week...

1) Re: the accent issue, it can be a little jarring at first, but you get used to it quite easily! What tends to matter most is the speaker's clarity and emotional tonality--can they get you into the story, in other words, and are the character voices believable outside of the accent? If you like that sort of thing, it's also a fun way to train your ear to hear other people's manner of speaking.

5) The image of Bond and Q watching silly animal videos on youtube is so cute! I can imagine that they'd like a low-key sort of comfort after a week of adrenaline/horror/anxiety/all-around stress.

I also love the image of them taking turns picking music, because of course you learn to like music when you've been exposed to it for long enough, even if you start out with a prejudice against it, so after a while Bond might be like "No, no, put on the OTHER electronic music, that one's better," and Q might start humming classic rock or whatever Bond likes to listen to without realizing it.

5) the closest I ever come to self-inserting is giving James my own music taste, but to be honest I have no idea what Q might listen to.

... one day Q starts singing Bruce Springsteen under his breath by accident in one of the labs and the whole room just goes silent and everyone turns in slow motion to stare at him

1) I love podfic! It's the perfect thing to listen to if you've got long travel planned, especially if, like me, you can't read for very long in cars or buses without getting a headache. Sometimes the added audio details--radio or telephone crackling, door creaking, etc--can be put you right into the moment. Also, sometimes the tone a reader uses can make you feel more, or differently, especially about emotional scenes. I don't usually cry while I'm reading, but I did while I was listening to Kuepo's reading of Synecdochic's amazing SGA fanfic "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." And greedy_dancer's reading of lc2l's "Minus One Degree Centigrade" made me laugh out loud in a way that reading the fic didn't. Along the same vein, good porn can sometimes go from bonfire to inferno when a skilled podfic reader's voice is cracking and gasping in your ear.

2) More EVERYTHING. More fans, more fic, more art, more gifsets--more freakin' content so we can base their relationship on more than like ten minutes of screen time together, jfc.

3) Thought about it, but no. I think the pressure of the word count would be too much for me as a writer still. Maybe next year I'll be in a better place to participate! I'm doing the Halloween Exchange, though. ^ ^

4) Dancing? Usually Bond (definitely Bond if it's classical dancing). Otherwise? They trade off according to who's got the most expertise when. For example, Q takes the lead re: any kind of home repair or handiwork; Bond is much better at knocking things down than putting them up.

5) When they're not busy saving the world, they occasionally indulge in a date night. Sometimes that'll mean accommodating wounds, exhaustion, or cuddly domesticity, ordering take-away, and staying in with Netflix (or Q's franken-program equivalent of Netflix), or a pair of really good books, or some BBC Radio Drama. Other times, when they've got the energy, it'll mean one surprising the other with plans to do something: tickets to a show or event, a scavenger hunt or spy hide-and-seek, a new sex toy or roleplay scenario to try out, etc.

1) Have you ever listened to podfic before? What are your views on it?
- YES! I've listened to a lot of podfic already. I mostly do when I'm working or on the train. It's actually pretty great - I don't care of people have an accent, if they read with feeling, I most certainly like it.

2) What is the one thing you are most looking forward to in the fandom after the Spectre release? (More fic/art? More Meta? More fans to join in the fun?)
- Fanfic and art. Old fans re-joining the fun.

3) Are any of you planning on taking part in the reverse big bang this year?
- I'M NOT GOOD AT ANYTHING, so maybe I'll join when there's THE perfect idea. Maybe.

4) Who do you think leads out of James and Q?
- *snort* both

- When Q doesn't feel well/is exhausted from social interaction or work hours, they will stay in with a movie, possibly something light like a romcom.

Old fans re-joining the fun. oh I hope so! there are so many writers who wrote a lot in the year after skyfall came out, I really hope they start up again

Hi, Kelli!

Glad to see another podfic fan on board! Like Carol, I'd love to hear your recommendations; it's been a little while since I've listened to the Bond ones! (Inception has some great podfic too, and I've listened to those more recently.)

The idea that Q and Bond both agree on romcoms as their genre of choice is fun! Do you think they do mostly vegging out (or maybe making out) during the movie, kind of just enjoying the fictional complications that don't have to do with geopolitical work crap, or are they more active watchers with predictions and snarky comments? (Or some other type of viewing style altogether, of course! ^ ^)

Hey Castillon,

sorry, I lost all my bookmarks when my old computer crashed last year, so I gotta dig up a few recs from memory tomorrow, I'm afraid. (Hell yeah, Inception has awesome podfic!)

I think when they're both too stressed out for any making out, they comment on the storyline, the subplot, and James cheers when the two 'who obviously have the hots for each other, I mean, look at all that sexual tension' actually kiss and/or get together.

Some short recs to start out with, because they're easier for new listeners and because I don't currently have the time to reacquaint myself with the longer ones:

"a cigarette you thought was gonna be your last," written by calciseptine and read by fire_juggler. 10 minutes. It's a lovely domestic fic and the reader is wonderfully clear. http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/cigarette-you-thought-was-gonna-be-your-last

"Q Branch Does Not Operate a Phone Sex Line," written by laughtershock, read by mothlights. Eight minutes. Funny exasperation in the reader's intonation and a nice "phone call" sound effect in Q's dialogue. When I first read the fic, I grinned but wasn't sure that Bond could be so obtuse; here, the reader's voice really sells Bond's POV and makes the whole joke of the fic's main misunderstanding seem perfectly natural. http://www.audiofic.jinjurly.com/q-branch-does-not-operate-phone-sex-line

"Prowl," written by professorfangirl, read by Justgot1. 19 minutes. The audio is slightly blunted in quality, but that's all right. Her Q and Bond voices are VERY nice. Very expressive. There's a minute of music in the beginning, and give it four or five minutes if you start out unsure of it--the reader grows in confidence and expression as she reads until she winds up enthralling. I didn't mean to listen to the whole thing again, but once I'd got to "I don't need your kind of maintenance" I simply couldn't stop myself from doing so. Awesome, thanks! I've tried doing some podfics for practice, and I know for a fact that a two-hour podfic is not an easy thing to make. What did you find easy or difficult about doing this? Did it change how you thought about the fic at all?
